Economic Impact of Gay Marriage in Iowa
The Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law released a study last week showing that legalizing gay marriage may have added $12-13 million to Iowa’s economy in 2009 and 2010. The study is based on an estimate of expenditures on wedding arrangements and hotels. You can find the full report by clicking here.

Some other interesting tidbits from the study:

  • Iowa issued 2,020 marriage licenses to same-sex couples between April 27, 2009, and March 31, 2010 (gay marriage became legal in Iowa on 4/27/09).
  • Of those marriage licenses issued, 41% were issued to Iowa residents; 59% were issued to out-of-state couples who came here to get a marriage license.
  • Couples from Illinois made up the greatest percentage of out-of-state couples coming to Iowa to get a marriage license. Other states with heavy representation include all states that border Iowa, as well as Colorado, Florida, Oklahoma and Texas.
Illinois Civil Union News
Same-sex civil unions have been allowed in Illinois for six months now. In that time, 3,700 civil union licenses have been issued. Click here for more from the Chicago Tribune.
Hawaii to Allow Joint Tax Returns
Same-sex civil unions will become legal in Hawaii in 2012. The Hawaii Attorney General says couples in civil unions can file as married on their Hawaii tax returns. As with other couples in same-sex marriages, civil unions or domestic partnerships, couples in Hawaii still won’t be able to file as married on their federal tax returns.
In a related story from Hawaii, a same-sex couple there has sued the state over not being able to get a marriage license (same-sex marriage is still banned in Hawaii, but civil unions will be allowed in 2012). Click here for more on this story.
